Hi! I am currently enrolled in a second language acquisition class to eventually learn how to teach English.
For one of my projects, I am supposed to interview a non-native English speaker, and I was hoping some of you could help. If you are willing to help and share
your story, I have listed the questions below. Not all of them have to be answered--just choose the questions you find interesting and appropriate. Thank you
to anyone who is able to help!
1. Where were you born?
2. If you were born in the US, were you residing in a primarily English speaking
neighborhood?
3. Was English spoken in your home?
4. Did your parents expect you to learn English?
5. What is your parents' educational level?
6. How did you go about learning English?
7. Did the work force motivate you to learn English?
8. Do you feel that schools were sensitive to your speaking of a different language?
9. Do you feel that your ethnicity is represented in the media?
10. What role did television (and other media) play in learning to speak English?
11. What was it like finding a job after developing English speaking skills?
12. (Considering the person has mastered English) How has being bilingual helped you in the work force?
13. How, if at all, has learning English helped you understand your native language?
14. What was easier to learn: the slang that we hear people speak on the streets, or the proper English required in formal writing?
15. Have you ever felt that you have lost command of either English or your native language due to a specific situation?
16. Do you feel that you have either lost or gained part of your culture due because of learning English?
17. How do those remaining in your native country feel about the effect of learning English on the loss of culture?
18. Did learning English make you feel pressured to assimilate to American culture?
19. Have you ever had to help teach a close friend, spouse, relative, etc the language? 20. What was it like to do so on a more intimate level rather than a school setting?
21. Do you feel there is any conflict in teaching your children to be bilingual?
